THANKS TO YOU – sponsors, participants and volunteers, the Women’s 5K Classic has distributed in the Greater Lehigh Valley a total of $2,528,694 (yes, that is over $2 and a half million dollars) since 1993. This year, our 22nd, the W5K event distributed $226,000 to worthy programs. Over 13,000 females (relatives, neighbors, friends, co-workers) benefitted or will benefit from these grants. Some of the programs that were funded include:
Women’s Cancer Education with Outreach Programs in several languages; as well as Digital Mammography/Diagnostic Ultrasound Projects and Breast and Gynecological Screenings for low, uninsured women, unemployed women and women of diversity.
Compression garments for women with cancer related lymphedema.
Provide a software program for genetic counseling for women with genetic history of cancer.
Comprehensive Breast and Gynecological Cancer Support Programs which involve fitness classes, stress reduction workshops, nutrition programs.
Social Work Funds to help with transportation, co-pay prescription costs, post mastectomy supplies and other needs where neither insurance nor income are available.
Better Start Early New Curriculum to be taught in all area high schools to girls about the importance of self-examinations as well as signs, symptoms and risk factors associated with other female cancers such as ovarian and cervical.
An education/running program for girls in grades 3-8 that combines training for a non-competitive 5K event with workouts that encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development while building self-esteem.
Advancing the Better Start Early curriculum to be taught in area high schools.
